NBC Universo: This channel is a reflection of NBC’s compromise with its Hispanic audience

NBC Universo, the modern general entertainment cable channel for Latinos, debuts on Sunday, February, 1

The NBC Universo screen (which drops the mun2 name this Sunday, February 1st), will no longer feature telenovelas and news content, but its own programming as the modern pay-TV channel for the Latino of today.“mun2 was basically a channel of music videos and experimented with celebrity realities and series. NBC Universo is a modern cable channel for Latinos that will broadcast the big sporting events worldwide, in addition to Latin American events and series never before seen in the U.S.,” told PRODU Rubén Mendiola, president of NBC Universo.February 1st, when the channel’s new name and image launches, coinciding with the Spanish-language broadcast of Super Bowl XLIX, NBC Universo –with the support of AT&T U-verse, Cablevision’s Optimum TV, Comcast’s Xfinity TV, Cox Communications, DIRECTV, DISH Network and Verizon FiOS-, will open up its signal to 74 million homes only for this day (it currently reaches 40 million households). After the broadcast of the big game, the channel will air the half-hour special Bienvenido a NBC Universo, giving details about the channels programming, followed by the exclusive U.S. premiere of the series Crónica De Castas (9×60’), from Mexico’s Canal Once.The channel will also bring this year the Viña del Mar Festival (February 22nd), and 15 Nascar Mexico races (March 13th).Mendiola said DIRECTV would add the channel in HD starting this Friday, January 30th.“I’ve been involved in many projects that have given me satisfaction throughout my career, but this channel’s challenge, having re-imagined it, having launched it, makes me really proud. Serving Latinos the right way has always been a passion of mine. We’re putting on the screen a product of great quality the audience will be happy to watch,” said Mendiola energized.
